Reactivating the Pirate Alliances Project

The rapid growth in the number of pirate events, combined with the limited space and resources available at many festivals, has created a new challenge. More international pirates are travelling to participate in events, while organizers often cannot accommodate every crew or activity that would like to attend.

During the International Pirate Rendez-vous, travelling members expressed renewed interest in reactivating the International Alliance Project as a way to address this challenge.

The objective is to encourage crews and organizations in the same region to work together rather than operate independently, allowing them to share:

• Human resources — crew members, performers, animators, specialists, and volunteers.

• Material resources — equipment, costumes, camps, displays, props, cannons, games, and other resources.

• Event space — coordinating and sharing available spaces between participating crews.

• Activities and programming — combining different skills and specialties to provide greater variety.

• Travel and logistics — helping travelling pirates participate more efficiently by coordinating resources and transportation where possible.

  
  

This approach would allow more crews and individuals to be represented at events without requiring every crew to bring its complete infrastructure.

It would also increase the diversity of activities presented at pirate events. Instead of seeing the same crews presenting the same activities year after year, regional alliances could rotate responsibilities and introduce different crews, performers, skills, and experiences.

The Goal

The Alliance Project is therefore not about creating larger or more dominant crews. It is about creating stronger cooperation between crews while preserving their individual identities.

The goal is to:

Maximize representation, increase diversity, share resources, reduce the burden on individual crews, and create a more sustainable international pirate event network.

As the pirate community continues to grow, cooperation will become increasingly important. Many crews, many alliances, and many traditions can work together to build one stronger international community.
